Easy Being Green

The luxurious accommodations of the new Harrison rentals at Steel Works are well-documented: large chef kitchens with quartz countertops and personal wine fridges, rainfall showers, high ceilings, custom modular closets, in-residence washers and dryers, stunning patios, and a sun-soaked roof deck—we could go on. While these features set Steel Works apart, the spirit behind them is even more special. At Steel Works, luxury meets “green”: it was designed to be remarkably environmentally efficient, without compromise.

For starters, the entire property is smoke-free, which helps maintain optimal air quality. The electricity in the common areas is powered by solar panels, which dramatically reduces the overall energy consumption of the property. The windows, which are from the Andersen Windows Silver Line Low-E collection, are Energy Star-certified for increased efficiency.

The Energy Star certifications don’t end there: interiors feature an array of Energy Star appliances that significantly reduce waste and pollution. Residences are outfitted with programmable thermostats that make every room in the apartment more comfortable while resulting in big savings on monthly electric bills. There are shared recycling facilities as well, and, if you’re an electric car driver, or you plan to become one, you’ll appreciate the on-site car charging stations.

Not all the sustainable design elements at Steel Works are visible: behind the scenes are water heaters, that exceed Energy Star requirements and have a high energy factor. Low-VOC paints, finishes, adhesives, and sealants were used throughout the property. VOC stands for volatile organic compounds, and high VOC materials can pollute and negatively impact indoor air quality and cause health issues.

All the decking throughout the property is made by Trex, an innovative company that turns sawdust and plastic bags into high-performance decking. Their products are constructed via an inventive process that dramatically reduces CO2 emissions, creating 95% recycled materials without the use of smokestacks.

What truly separates Steel Works from many other buildings that claim the “green” moniker is the dedication to sustainability at all levels. Environmental efficiency was clearly a paramount concern for every inch of the property. The green features here not only make life more convenient and save residents money, but, more importantly, they serve to improve overall health and positively impact the planet. Creating a sustainable apartment complex isn’t always the easiest venture, but the extra effort most certainly pays off.
